I am using Windows XP pro. I was wondering if there was any way of displaying a little animated gif with sound if my password is put in incorrectly at the log in screen.

Actually, yes, you can but it is very hard to do. You would need to create a custom GINA to do this. The GINA subsystem handles logons. log offs and user switching. Writing a replacement is possible but something that I would never recommend because it is very easy to render the system unusable, very hard to do and the rewards are minimal.

Under Vista, you can’t do this at all. The successor to GINA is not replaceable.
